1 week, 1 tough flu

For the past week, I've been battling a heavy virus which crept into my body what seemed like in a matter of hours. What I thought was a cough from heavy breathing into strong winds after a long run a week ago turned into a raw throat, fever, congestion and fatigued - not your typical post long run symptoms!

As a trainer, I encourage all my clients to rest when they are very sick and to respect my own advice, I've been resting as much as possible with the occasional short run and hot yoga class to clear my lungs and stretch my legs. However, the hardest question is answer for anyone who is sick is when do you decide to resume your normal life versus taking another day of rest? Typically, the rule of thumb is if the illness is above your next, you are safe to remain active and go to work but when it falls below the neck (upset stomach, irritable bowels, etc.) then you may reconsider.

Best Health Magazine provides a good chart http://www.besthealthmag.ca/get-healthy/health/are-you-too-sick-to-work which considers your symptoms and whether you are healthy enough to work. However, your body itself is the biggest indicator of what you should do. Listen to your aches and pains and do not negotiate your health for a little extra income. You won't regret the extra rest!

Yours in health,
Jenna
